Serie A: Inter 2-1 Catania

MILAN - The goals came from midfielders as Inter followed up last weekend's 5-0 win at Genoa with a 2-0 home victory over Catania.

It was plain sailing at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza with Sulley Muntari grabbing a quick opener to become the eleventh different Inter player to score in Serie A this season, and Wesley Sneijder doubling up just past the half hour.

Catania sub Mascara reduced the gap from the penalty spot seven minutes from time.

Mourinho made three changes to the side that held Dynamo Kiev in midweek. Balotelli partnered Eto'o up front after sitting out the Champions League clash through suspension as Inter went from 4-3-2-1 to 4-3-1-2.

Cordoba came in for Samuel in defence and Vieira slotted into a holding midfield role, with Sneijder at the tip of the diamond midfield and Muntari and Zanetti (who joined club legend Giacinto Facchetti in second place on the all-time list of Serie A appearances for Inter) on the wings.

The early goal came on 13 minutes. Muntari floated in a deep cross from the left and Eto'o tired to divert it home with an outstretched leg but there was no need as the ball bounced on its way past Campagnolo.

Catania striker Morimoto was a solitary figure up front in the first half as his team-mates struggled to provide decent service, and the Rossazzurri found themselves limited to long-range efforts, the best of which fell to Carboni who forced a difficult save from Julio Cesar.

The Nerazzurri should have been two-nil up in the 28th minute when Vieira's saw his crisp half volley from close range bounce back off the bar, but Sneijder added the second three minutes later to put Inter in total control, scoring from a trademark curling free kick that found the top left corner.

Catania boss Atzori made two changes at the break, bringing on Ledesma and Mascara for Izco and Biagianti. But Inter's domination continued and Eto'o came close after Campaganolo's punched clearance from Sneijder's free kick, his header from the edge of the box floating on to the roof of the net.

Inter had a further chance when Maicon's 20-yard shot soared just over after Balotelli's header from Sneijder's corner was fisted clear by the Catania custodian.

The Rossazzurri were handed a lifeline with time running out when Mascara slotted home from the spot after Julio Cesar's foul on Plasmati, but it was Inter who went closest to a late goal when Balotelli sent a brilliant curling free kick just wide of the post.

Serie A: Inter 5-3 Palermo

MILAN - Inter scored four without reply before half time but Palermo produced a strong second-half comeback before Diego Milito celebrated his return from injury with goal number five in a thrilling 5-3 victory at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

In a match which saw Cordoba make his 400th appearance in black and blue, Stankovic his 300th for Italian clubs, and Javier Zanetti surpass Giacinto Facchetti's total of 476 Serie A games, strike partners Samuel Eto'o and Mario Balotelli scored braces to seemingly put Inter in complete control at the half-way mark, but Miccoli added a double of his own either side of Hernandez' goal to leave the result hanging in the balance.

Diego 'Il Principe' Milito, on for Balotelli in the second half, restored a two-goal advantage for the Nerazzurri with his sixth of the season to put José Mourinho's defending champions four points clear at the top of the table.

Cameroon goal machine Eto'o opened the floodgates from the penalty spot early on, sending Sirigu the wrong way after a Melinte foul on Balotelli in the box. The Italy Under-21 international added the second ten minutes before the break, rising above the Rosanero defence to head home Maicon's corner.

Inter were goal hungry and they were three-nil up by the 42nd when Balotelli saw Cambiasso's header over the line after Sirigu failed to clear Samuel's header. Not to be outdone, Eto'o crashed home the fourth - his fifth in Serie A - within sixty seconds after Balotelli brilliantly turned Migliaccio before setting up his team-mate.

The second half was anything but a walk in the park as Zenga's men battled their way back, scoring three times in a 20-minute spell. Miccoli beat Samuel to a long ball forward before lifting over Julio Cesar and crashing into an open net four minutes after the break. The Palermo striker slid home his second from a tight angle on 67 minutes, just after substitute Hernandez slotted home a pin-point cross from Cassani.

Suddenly, Inter had a game on their hands, and things weren't looking good when Eto'o hobbled off after hurting his foot when taking a shot. He was replaced by Thiago Motta and the Nerazzurri reorganised well to keep a buoyant Palermo side at bay.

Milito gave his team the required breathing space with seven minutes remaining when he slotted home from close range after Maicon's superb move down the right.

Serie A: Livorno 0-2 Inter

LIVORNO - Inter warmed up for Kiev with a 2-0 victory over Livorno in Serie A Week 11 at the Stadio Armando Picchi.

Diego Milito and Maicon sent the Amaranto to their first defeat under Serse Cosmi with goals in the second half to put us seven points clear at the top. Sampdoria join Juventus in second place after their 0-0 home draw against Bari.

Mourinho rested Cambiasso, Eto'o and Samuel ahead of Wednesday's Champions League match, handing Rene Krhin his first Serie A start after appearances as a substitute against Parma and Catania.

The 19-year-old Slovenian slotted in alongside Vieira and Muntari as Mourinho reverted to a 4-3-2-1 'Christmas tree' formation with Mancini and Stankovic in support of solitary striker Milito.

Cordoba continued at the back and was partnered by Lucio, who sat out Thursday's win over Palermo, with Zanetti switching to left-back in place of the suspended Chivu.

Francesco Toldo returned to Milan after becoming the second victim of the flu in the Inter camp after Mario Balotelli. He was replaced on the bench by Orlandoni.

Cambiasso made his entrance sooner than expected after Inter lost Muntari to injury, while Eto'o came on for Krhin at the start of the second half.

Spurred on by a vocal crowd, Livorno had the better chances of a low-key first half, Candreva coming closest in added time with a thunderbolt free kick that brought a superb save out of Julio Cesar.

Milito put the game on the right track with his 7th goal for Inter four minutes after the interval. Stankovic picked out the Argentine with a square pass and Il Principe elegantly turned Miglionico, picked his spot and sent a crisp low shot beyond Benussi's grasp.

Adopting a cat and mouse approach, the Nerazzurri proceeded to stifle Livorno's attacking play. Mourinho added an extra reinforcement in defence midway through the half, bringing on Samuel for Stankovic and pushing Zanetti into midfield.

Maicon doubled the lead ten miniutes from time, taking Vieira's short pass to the edge of the area and poking low into the bottom corner for his third of the campaign.

There was still work to do in the closing stages as Julio Cesar made a tipped save from Candreva's free kick, before Danilevicius sent his low effort narrowly wide.

UEFA Champions League ( 2009/2010 )

Champions League: Dynamo Kiev 1-2 Inter

KIEV - Inter produced a stunning fightback to beat Dynamo Kiev at the Valeriy Lobanovskiy Stadium and move a point clear at the top of Group F with two matches left to play.

Andriy Shevchenko's deflected goal gave the hosts a first-half lead and it looked like Gazzaev's men would hold out for victory after surviving a barrage of second-half attacks, but with time running out Diego Milito and Wesley Sneijder reduced the Dynamo faithful into silence with two crucial goals.

Sneijder was passed fit to play in Kiev, returning in his playmaker role behind the strikers and the Dutchman send a floated shot inches over as Inter made a better start than in the reverse fixture two weeks ago.

Dynamo, who deployed the same starting eleven that drew 2-2 in Milan, settled into an aggressive rhythm and took the lead in the 21st minute.

Mileskiy's throw found Shevchenko on the edge of the box and the former Rossoneri striker's shot took a deflection off Cambiasso and sailed over the diving Julio Cesar.

Eto'o fired over from an acute angle and Milito drove straight at Bogush as Inter carved out opportunities for a leveller before the break, but changes were required and José Mourinho brought on Balotelli and Thiago Motta for Chivu and Cambiasso after half time.

The second half was all Inter. Eto'o appeared to be shoved off the ball as his header from Samuel's flick went just wide. The Argentine defender went even closer when he hit the post with a classy flicked header from Sneijder's free kick. And Balotelli was left rueing a golden chance when he poked inches wide with just Bogush to beat.

Eto'o headed wide again as Inter continued to torment their opponents and the comeback goal came four minutes from the end when Sneijder dazzled two opponents and played into the path of Milito, who stroked past Bogush. The Dutchman capped a fine performance on his return from injury with the winner a minute from time, prodding over the line after Bogush made double saves from Muntari and Milito.

Serie A

Serie A: Inter 1-1 Roma

MILAN - Inter take a five-point lead over second-placed Juventus into the third international break of the season as José Mourinhos team followed up their midweek win in Kiev with a gritty 1-1 draw against Roma.

Mirko Vucinic 'made his third chance count after two misses to give the Giallorossi an early lead, Samuel Eto'o replying with his sixth Serie A goal shortly after the break.

Mourinho (now unbeaten in 150 domestic league and cup fixtures at home) rested Sneijder and Cambiasso for Sunday night's clash, which kicked off after a video to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Angelo Moratti. The Inter coach moved Zanetti to left-back and starting Muntari, Vieira and Thiago Motta behind Stankovic in midfield.

Eto'o and Milito continued up front but it was Roma number nine Vucinic who had the early chances. He was intercepted by Lucio for his first and sent his second way over, but the Montenegrin got his aim right with chance three, towering above Lucio to meet Motta's cross from the right and sending his looping header over Julio Cesar.

Roma had their keeper Julio Sergio to thank for keeping a clean sheet until half time. The Brazilian made a vital block from Milito after a brilliant through ball by Muntari. He showed his awareness again minutes later, beating Stankovic to a through ball before a double error by Mexes went unpunished.

Mexes had been struggling with a knee knock but the French defender played on with the captain's armband after Roma lost De Rossi in the 34th minute after injuring his cheekbone in a duel with Vieira.

Roma were denied the space to counter and Milito produced another chance before half time, turning Andreolli before seeing his deflected shot go behind.

All the ingredients were there for a repeat of Kiev. Roma had been sitting on their lead, their only chances coming from set pieces and Riise narrowly missed before the break with a low deflected free kick. Mourinho made two changes at the start of the second half, bringing on Balotelli and Sneijder for Muntari and Vieira to give his team a more attacking edge.

Inter's equaliser came at just the right time. Three minutes in, Thiago Motta pounced on a loose ball after Maicon's cross and played into the path of Eto'o who swivelled and arrowed his precise shot past Julio Sergio.

Both teams had plenty of chances to win the game. Menez forced a fisted block from Julio Cesar, who later kept out an effort from Faty. But at 1-1, the only team to hit the back of the net was Inter, Milito crashing home after latching on to Sneijder's headed pass, only for the flag to go up for offside.
